How does the feed in tariff work?
The government has introduced a number of schemes to encourage homeowners to reduce their CO2 emissions by investing in renewable energy.
Here's how it works: Your energy supplier will pay you a set rate for every unit or kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity you generate. Currently, this generation tariff is 41.3p per unit generated. For every unit of energy you generate, but do not use and export to the grid, you will receive another 3p and because you are generating some of your own electricity, your bills will be lower because you will be buying less from your supplier. This means that an average sized solar electricity installation could be saving you £1179 per year, every year for the next 25 years.
